Kia ora and welcome to Omakere School.
My name is Sue Taylor and I have had the absolute privilege of being the Principal of Omakere School for the past six years. My teaching and leadership journey began in rural schools across the Bay of Plenty, and that love for rural education has stayed with me ever since.
I am a proud mum of four and nana to four wonderful mokopuna who live right across Aotearoa – from Invercargill to Wairoa – and who are working in fields ranging from healthcare to self-employment. This gives me a deep appreciation for the many pathways our tamariki will take and the importance of nurturing confident, capable, and values-driven young people.
My personal strengths lie in mathematics education, digital fluency, and Google for Education. At Omakere School, these strengths are woven into a broader belief in strength-based teaching and learning – where we notice, value, and grow each learner’s unique talents, interests, and passions.
I am immensely proud to lead Omakere School. We are an innovative, forward-thinking Enviroschool that places relationships, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga at the heart of everything we do. We know our tamariki well, we walk alongside their whānau, and we provide rich, purposeful learning experiences that connect to the real world. Our students come from our local rural community and also travel from Waipawa and Waipukurau on our own school bus – making Omakere a truly connected regional kura.
At Omakere School we teach our learners to be problem-finders and problem-solvers. They use digital tools to create, collaborate, and think deeply, while also developing a strong sense of environmental responsibility and care for the world around them.
Our vision, Kei te whakatupu i whakamanahia ngā akonga – Growing Empowered Learners, is not just words on the wall. It is who we are, how we teach, and how we lead.
Nō reira, welcome to our kura – a place full of learning, heart, and community.
Ngā mihi nui,
Sue Taylor
